此曲選自1935年蓋希文George Gershwin (1898－1937）的爵士樂歌劇 波吉與貝絲 Porgy and Bess。 這是第一部以美國中下階層黑人生活為背景的作品 ，描述20年代美國南方黑人如何在困境下求生存人際的互動。民族特色與嶄新的爵士樂風，使它成為美國歌劇中的傑出代表作。
夏日時光Summertime 的歌詞，是一首搖籃曲，旋律聽起來有點心酸，由飾演母親角色克拉拉Clara輕柔地吟唱出黑人保母照顧白人少主的無限感慨。
在台灣，此曲曾被翻唱成黃俊雄布袋戲插曲”噢!媽媽”，是很多人熟悉的旋律。

表數不定代名詞如one、any、each、both、two、some、many、most、all、few、a few、 ….，表數不定代名詞為句子主詞時，one/any/each 要接單數動詞，其餘都是接複數動詞。

b. One of his sisters is an English teacher.他有一個姐姐是英文老師。
c. Most of the students here are from Taiwan.
這裡大部分的學生是來自台灣。
(*most of + the+複數名詞 是指某一群體中的大部分，
與 most
+複數名詞 大部分的…. 意思有區別)
2.表量不定代名詞+ of + the/所有格+不可數名詞
表量不定代名詞如much、a little、little、all、most、some、any…..，表量不定代名詞當主詞時，一律接單數動詞。
例: a. Most of the money is yours. 大部分的錢是我的。
b. All of the milk goes bad. 所有的牛奶都壞掉了。
3. of 後面可能是複數的代名詞, 但一定要用受格them，of 後面若是接,不可數名詞的代名詞，則用受格it.
例: a.One of them will
be your teacher.他們其中一位將會是你的老師。
b. We
prepare water for the participants , Some of it is available
around every corner.
我們有為參與者準備水，有些水放在各個角落供取用。
4.both/all + of ...後若是接名詞，則 of 可省略
例: Both (of) her grandmothers are passed away. 她的兩位祖母都過世了。
All (of) the milk goes sour. 所有的牛奶都變酸了。
5. two of the…是指中兩個。在於 both of … 是指兩者都...，所以each of後面的名詞總數只會有兩個。
例: He has two
sisters, both of them live in Taipei.
他有兩個姐姐，他們都住在台北。
He has three sisters, two of
them live in Taipei.
他有三個姐姐，其中兩位住在台北。

有一首與這時代背景相同的民歌 棉花田 Cotton Fields (1940)，則是描寫另一位同樣成長於種植棉花的農村孩子，父母為了搶收作物，在田間勞作時必須把他帶在身邊，看著父母的劬勞長大，這是許多也是農家子弟生活的真實寫照。
