Should have, would have, could have, might have, must have

後悔是生命中常會有的情緒，沒能好好經營的關係及未能把握的時機都會令人後悔，後悔是一種反省，有機會後悔是好的，最怕是後悔莫及，有句話說:人生無常，愛要及時! Life is fickle, love in time! 趁著有還機會的時候，像帶我回家，鄉村路Take me home, country road 歌詞所說的，應該早點回家的 (I should've been home yesterday)。
英文用來表達應該做而未做可以用Should have, would have, could have, might have, must have …。中文的動詞沒有過去、現在、未來的分別，當學習英文時有時難免會中式語法來理解英文，因此誤用英文語意，其中Should, would, could, might，must是華人經常誤用的英文語法。Should, would, could, might 雖然是Shall，will, can, may 的過去式，但是用法有時卻與過去式無關，而是一種較禮貌的語法。must意思是”必須、一定”，musn’t 則為 ”不准”。

例: a. We shouldn’t eat too much junk food.

我們不應該吃太多垃圾食物。(與過去式無關)

b. I would like to have some coffee.我想喝些咖啡。(與過去式無關)

Could you give me a hand? 你可以幫我忙嗎? (與過去式無關)

c. Amy doesn’t go to school, she might be sick.

Amy沒去上學，她(現在)可能生病了。(與過去式無關)

d. The light is on, she must be home. 燈正亮著，她現在一定在家。

e. You mustn’t smoke. 你不准抽菸

然而Should, would, could,…等助動詞後面若加上 “have +p.p” ，是在指過去原本應該/會/可以發生卻沒有發生的事情。若加上 “not have+p.p” 則是在指過去原本不應該/不會/不可以發生卻發生的事情。而助動詞might, must後面若加上 “have +p.p” 是表示對過去事情的推測，意思為可能是/一定是，若加上 “not have+p.p” 則是推測過去可能不是/一定不是。這類句型都是用在對過去已發生的事情的檢討。本單元Take me home, country road歌詞最後一句 ”I should’ve been home yesterday” 就是表達昨天早就應該要回到家中，卻沒有的後悔心境。

例：a.昨天你應該來我家的，你錯過了大好時光。

(X) You should come to my home yesterday, you missed the great time. (錯誤語法)

(O) You should have come to my home yesterday, you missed the big chance.(正確語法) (表示你昨天應該要來我家卻沒有來)

b.昨晚你不應該獨自去公園的。那很危險。

(X) You should not go to the park alone last night. It was dangerous.

(錯誤語法)

(O) You should not have gone to the park alone last night. It was dangerous. (正確語法) (表示你昨晚不應該獨自去公園卻去了)

c.我本來是會幫他忙的，但是我當時太忙了。

( X ) I would help him, but I was too busy then. (錯誤語法)

(O) I would have helped him, but I was too busy then.

(正確語法) (表示我當時應該幫忙他的，因為太忙了卻沒有做到)

d. 你可以(事先)要告訴我你做不到這件事, 這樣我就不用等這麼久了。

(X) You could tell me you weren’t able to make it, so I wouldn’t have to wait so long (錯誤語法)

(O) You could have told me you weren’t able to make it, so I wouldn’t have had to wait so long. (正確語法) (表示你可事先告知我你做不到，你卻沒有告知，而我本來不會等你這麼久的，卻是等了很久。)

e. Amy昨天沒去上學，她(昨天)可能生病了。

(X) Amy didn’t go to school, she might be sick. (錯誤語法)

(O) Amy didn’t go to school, she might have been sick. (正確語法)

(表示推測Amy昨天可能因為生病了才沒去上學)

d. (當時)燈亮著，她昨晚一定在家。

(X) The light was on, she must be home last night. (錯誤語法)

(O) The light was on, she must have been home last night. (正確語法) (表示昨晚她家的燈有亮著，推測她人一定在家)

本單元歌曲帶我回家鄉村路Take me home, country road所描述的美國West Virginia西維吉尼亞州，美麗山脈、潺潺溪流、母親身影及家鄉味道配上簡單易唱的美妙旋律，在全美卻造成轟動，進而流行於全球各地成了一首最具代表性的返鄉之歌。
