這是一首蘇格蘭民謠，是 William Douglas (abt. 1665-1705) 在1705年為愛人安妮羅莉寫的詩，之後Alicia Scott(1810–1900) 於1834譜上旋律，詞曲優美，成了世界名曲。著名日本的卡通”小王子”就以此為主題音樂。

愛美之心，人皆有之，中文有很多形容女子美麗的成語，除了最經典形容中國四大美女西施、王昭君、貂蟬、楊貴妃的”沉魚落雁、閉月羞花”之外，還有傾國傾城、國色天香、艷冠群芳…等無數詞藻豐富的比喻；英文給予美女的形容詞也不少，如lovely/ pretty/ attractive/ fair/ graceful/ gorgeous/ exquisite/ amiable/ ravishing/ stunning/ elegant/ glamorous … 等；然而外表是短暫虛浮的 (Beauty is only skin deep)，審美觀因人而異，聖經箴言裡有句詼諧的話 : “婦女美貌而無見識，如同金環帶在豬鼻上。Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.”，金環是當時婦女的裝飾品，此句意思是指美麗的裝飾加上美好的品格，才能相得益彰、顯現主人的榮美；安妮蘿莉 Annie Laurie 歌曲中，作者雖用了許多的比喻來形容愛人的美，如Her brow is like the snow drift 她的眉毛雪絨般漂亮…等 ，愛人的安靜祥和 (Her voice is low and sweet ) 才是他們的關係恆久不渝的基礎。歌詞中 ”is like ”這個語詞重覆地出現，中文解釋為”像”，like是日常生活最常用到的英文單字之一，英文初學者對其意思卻常常混淆，因為當like詞性不同時，意思也很不同，其用法簡介如下:

I like playing basketball. 我喜歡打棒球。

d. would like+ 名詞: 意思是“想要某物"。

例：I would like some milk. 我想要一些牛奶。

e. would like to+ V : 意思是“想要做某事"。

例：I would like to join the singing contest.我想要參加歌唱比賽。

2. like當介係詞時 a. be like : 意思是“像…"

例: Her brow is like the snow drift. 她的眉毛雪絨般漂亮

Her neck is like the swan. 她的玉頸如天鵝般秀麗

b. feel like + ving : 意思是“想要做某事…"

例: I feel like sleeping. 我想睡覺。

c. 連綴動詞+ like+名詞 :

look like看起來像/feel like感覺像、摸起來像 /taste like嘗起來像/

sound like 聽起來像 / smell like聞起來像 /seem like似乎

例: It tastes like rubber。它吃起來像橡膠。

d. like當連接詞: 有”例如或像…”意思。

例: Like dew on the gowan lying, is the fa' o' her fairy feet.

4.名詞字尾加上 like : 形成形容詞，意思是“像….的"。
