八世紀蘇格蘭詩人羅伯特伯恩斯Robert Burns(1759-1796）根據父老口傳寫下的詩，後來被譜了歌曲。在很多西方國家通常會在除夕夜演唱這首歌，象徵迎接新年的來臨。
在台灣則被翻譯成 驪歌，象徵離別。此曲在電影魂斷藍橋Waterloo Bridge (1940)中為主題曲，與電影情節完美結合，令人懷念不已。部份百貨公司或機構在臨近打烊時刻，會播出此旋律，提醒訪客盡快離開。

Making a toast
敬酒 (Making a toast):
不論東西方，每當親友團聚時，總會舉杯敬酒相互祝福。敬酒一詞的英文是toast，而toast一字原意是吐司麵包片，它用來表示敬酒之意起源於12世紀，據說當時英國人喜歡將烤土司麵包片浸到酒杯中，讓它吸收酒的酸味，使酒的味道更加香醇，而蘸過酒的麵包吃起也來更美味。
當時被敬酒的人往往會收到一片蘸滿葡萄酒的麵包，到了17、18世紀toast這個字逐發展出敬酒的新意。
在宴會場合中，為了使每個人都得到敬酒機會、確保場面活絡及防止秩序混亂，於是開始有了Toastmaster致敬酒辭者的出現，這個角色可以說是宴會主持人。
A Toastmasters Meeting
(Since 1924)
成立於1924年，在全球141個國家擁有16,400分會 (2018年資料)，以學習溝通與領導技能為主軸的知名口說訓練社團  Toastmasters International  就是取其精義，以此命名，在台灣是頗受語言學習者歡迎的社團。敬酒常用語:
1.正式的用詞如make a toast to sb.或 propose a toast to sb.，有隨意用酒的意思。
 例:a. Let’s propose a toast to the the bride and bridegroom.
    我們來向新娘新郎敬酒。
   b. Let’s make a toast! 我們一起舉杯歡慶!
   c. Let me make a toast. 我來敬酒。
2.若是強調”乾杯”則用Cheers!、Bottoms up!、Down the hatch!、
Drink up!  ....等。
例: Here’s to you. Cheers! 敬你。乾杯!
3.敬酒祝福語:
 a. We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
讓我們一起舉杯暢飲為了往日美好年華
  b. Here’s to a wonderful future. 為美好的未來乾杯。
c. May you always be lucky. 祝你永遠幸福。
