1852年美國作家哈里特·比徹·斯托Harriet Beecher Stowe（斯托夫人）發表的一部反奴隸制的小說 黑奴籲天錄 或翻譯成 湯姆叔叔的小屋Uncle Tom's Cabin。據說美國民謠大師史蒂芬佛斯特Stephen Forster (1826-1864) 就是根據這本反黑奴鉅著在1853年寫出這首傳世名曲。
歌詞中描述有些黑奴原本在固定農場工作，有著快樂的家庭生活，卻突然被主人轉賣，從此妻離子散，勞苦終日。這真是一首悲天憫人的傑作。

Must & Have to必須

世上有許多人離鄉背井，有人是為了追求更美好的前程，旅居他鄉；
有人是在天災或戰亂中，被迫選擇離開故土；
還有人是為了完成使命的呼召，放棄原本安定的生活，深入荒地；

肯塔基老家鄉 My old Kentucky Home 歌詞中所描述的則是當時妻離子散的黑奴悲歌。
\無論是北漂或下鄉，異地而居一開始都是辛苦的，總是有許多”必須”重新適應的事。

用來表達”必須”的英文有助動詞must 和have to，

兩者在句子中有時可互換，

如My old Kentucky Home 的這句歌詞

， 雖然基本上為同義詞，但是其語氣強度

與使用時機還是有些差異，以下就must 和

have to 的差異做簡單概述:

1.must: must著重於說話者的主觀看法，

表達個人情感或強烈義務的”一定要”；

have to則是用於客觀事實，陳述來自外在規範，

非個人感情因素的”必須”。

例: It’s very cold today. You must put on your coat while going out.

今天很冷，你外出時必須要穿上外套。

(使用must，屬於說話者個人主觀情感，認為對方一定要穿外套)

You have to put on a uniform when you are at school.

你上學時必須要穿制服。

(使用have to，表示穿制服是客觀外來規範的必須)

2.在時態方面，have to有第三人稱單數現在式動詞has to、過去式動 詞had to、未來式動詞will have to、完成式動詞have(has) had to”..…等變化。 Must 沒有過去式，只能用在現在式及未來式，用在過去式時，要借用had to當過去式動詞。

例: 我昨天必須很早去上班。

(O) I had to go to work very early yesterday.

(X) I must to go to work very early yesterday.

(must沒有過去式，所以只能用had to表達過去式)

例外) Must 沒有過去式，若是要保留must且含有過去意思，有以下兩種狀況a.間接敘述 b.表達對過去事情的推測句型 must have +過去分詞的句子中有含有過去意思。

例: Amy said that we must go there with her.

(we must go there with her是間接敘述可以用must表達過去)

He must have been a doctor.他以前一定是個醫生。

(must have + 過去分詞，表示對過去事物的推測)

3.表示必然性、或推測性的”一定”只能用must，不能用have to

There must be misunderstanding. 一定有誤會。

Mom hasn’t been home yet. She must be busy doing her business now.

媽媽還沒到家，她現在應該還在忙著做生意。

4.雖然must 和have to語意大致相通，但是兩者的否定詞意思卻完全不同。must的否定“must not” (musn’t) 表示”禁止、不允許”，而

have to 的否定式 don’t have to 意為 “不必、不一定要、沒有義務”

例: You mustn’t smoke here. 你禁止在這裡抽菸。

You mustn’t do it. 你不准做這件。

You don’t have to do it. 你不必做這件事。

We don't have to get up early on Saturdays.我們週六不一定要早起。

He doesn’t have to tell us the secret.他沒有義務告訴我們這秘密。

5.表示必然性或推測性的”一定”只能用must，不能用have to

例:There must be misunderstanding between us .我們之間一定有誤會。

Mom hasn’t been home yet. She must be busy doing her business now.

媽媽還沒到家，她現在應該還在忙著做生意。

6.表示強烈的勸告或義務要用must

　You must finish the project by next Monday.

你下週一之前一定要完成這個專案。

(這裡也可使用have to, 但must的語氣比have to更強烈)

7.表示誠摯地希望對方”一定”要出席時，只能用must， 不能用have to。例: 請您一定要來，我們期待明天見到您。

(O)You must come and we are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

(X) You have to come and we are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. (You have to come表示對方在規範下一定得出席，此句翻譯:你務必出席，我們期待明天見到你。)
